Well, I am not a Sri Lankan, but I feel that I know her better than my own motherland. Hmm!...to start with an introduction, Sri Lanka is an island surrounded by Indian ocean and situated in South-East Asia or just south of India. The people here belief that their generation came from the dynasty of Lions and they call themselves as Sinhala (sinha = lion). As Sri Lanka is an island they got their unique culture, tradition, belief, though not totally separable from other South East Asian countries, still with a slight difference in its form. The majority of Sri Lankans are of Buddhist faith, while there are others who follow the faiths like Christianity, Hinduism, and Islam. As far as I know they co-exist together harmoniously with mutual understanding. The Adam's peak or Siripada is religiously equally valuable to Buddhists, Christians as well to Muslims. Buddhists consider it as a place where the Buddha has left his foot prints, Christians think it is where Adam has put his foot for the first time on earth, and the Muslims think.... . And there another interesting place called Kataragama which is very sacred to all. People here belief that if they go there and make a vow, surely it will be granted. Therefore we can see besides religion, other cults like offering to gods, and deities is another common practice among the Sri Lankans.
Parents are considered as the gods at home by the Sri Lankans. The younger generation thinks it's their duty, towards the old generation who has done so much for them, to look after and take care of them with feelings of gratitude. Mahavamsa that records the history of Sri Lanka in every aspect in poetic language is the national treasure of Sri Lanka.
